Nyhavn, Copenhagen

There's something about Copenhagen that just makes you want to roam about aimlessly, discovering everything that the city has to offer. With it's simply breathtaking scenery, adorable stores and cafes and incredible restaurants, this city has something for everyone. 

While the whole city is beautiful, it was the area of Nyhavn that really left a lasting impression on me.  Stroll around Nyhavn, and let your eyes feast on one of the city's arguably most picturesque districts.  With houses dating back to the late 1600's, the area is rich with history, colour and character.   In the 17th and 18th centuries, the harbour was originally a thriving commercial hub, built as a 'gateway from the sea to the old city.'  Not only is the area famous for it's harbour, but Hans Christen Anderson lived and wrote in many houses in Nyhavn.  'The Tinder Box' and 'The Princess and the Pea' were both written by Anderson in house no. 20 where he resided for four years in the 1800's. 

Today Nyhavn is full of thriving pubs, bars, cafes and restaurants.  The district is often referred to as the 'longest bar in Scandinavia' due to the never-ending line of outdoor tables and chairs.  The area is lined with old yet beautiful houses, each a different vibrant colour.  The port is filled with wooden maritime boats, giving a historical feel to the area.  Nyhavn has an incredibly relaxed, feel good atmosphere and is particularly popular in the summer time, when tourists explore and locals enjoy takeaway drinks by the quayside.  Don't think the area is just for the warmer months though, most restaurants supply blankets on each chair to make life in Denmark's winter months slightly more bearable. 

The best way to see Copenhagen, Nyhavn and all it's other glorious offerings? Bikes.  The city is ridiculously ideal for cycling, with it's flat terrain and the close proximity between attractions.  It's a much cheaper alternative to other ways of transport and is a great way to see the city all the while getting some fresh air and exercise.  36% of the Copenhagen population commute to work or studies daily - everyday in the city about 1.2 million kilometres are cycled!  The city has numerous stores which hire out bikes to tourists at great prices.
